The photograph is one of the most haunting photograph I have ever seen. This makes me question the ethics of the photographic practice. When does the photographer stop photographing to help the subject? Just like a doctor is trained to save lives, a soldier is trained to kill lives, similarly a photo journalist is trained to just be an observer and document the moment as it is.
The image first appeared on The New York Times on March 26, 1993. The picture won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 1994. Carter died by suicide in 1994 at the age of 33.
I came across this image when I was reading the book "100 Photographs - The most influential Images of all time".
