ai is just automation of labour at the highest degree

This is a snippet from the book "The Eye of the Master", by Matteo Pasquinelli. It also argues that the inner code of AI is not a consequence of the imitation of the biological intelligence but the intelligence of labour and social relations.
The purpose has of computers has always been blind automation. Pure intelligence is fundamentally a biological phenomenon. So unless we replicate things at a cellular level, artificial intelligence will always be "artificial", as the name suggests. It would be an automation tool deriving the logic (so called intelligence), from huge datasets, which primarily are nothing but outcomes of pure human labour.
