Outside Eyes on Odisha
International photographers, anthropologists and art historians who documented Orissa / Odisha through photographs, field notes, temple studies and visual archives.
Framing note
For more than a century, Odisha has appeared in the work of international photographers, anthropologists, art historians, museum researchers and field scholars. Some photographed the beaches of Puri and the painting village of Raghurajpur. Some built visual archives around Adivasi communities in Koraput, Rayagada, Phulbani and southern Odisha. Others studied temple architecture, Jagannath culture, palm-leaf manuscripts, pata painting and ritual life through books, photographs, field notes and museum collections.
This page should not claim that outsiders saw Odisha more truthfully than Odias themselves. It should be framed as a research index: a way to trace how Odisha has been photographed, studied, framed and archived through international eyes, while linking every image or reference back to its original source.

Why this person belongs on the page: Elwin’s Odisha-related photographs include “Gadaba woman of Orissa, 1943” and “Bondo woman, Koraput District, Orissa, 1946,” reproduced in a SOAS working paper on his photographic exhibitions. His material is important but needs careful ethical framing because it comes from an ethnographic archive.
